Bringing healthcare where it’s needed most.

Mercy Care is a Federally Qualified Health Center providing compassionate medical and social services across Atlanta, especially for people facing barriers to care.

Serving Atlanta Since 1985

The Sisters of Mercy have cared for people in the South for more than 150 years. During the Civil War, even President Abraham Lincoln thanked them for their compassion. In 1880 they opened Atlanta’s first hospital, later called Saint Joseph’s. Mercy Care became a nonprofit in 1985 and, in 2001, opened our clinic and headquarters on Decatur Street in downtown Atlanta.

Stories of Hope & Healing

Mercy Care is celebrating 40 years of compassionate care.

2025 marks Mercy Care’s 40th year of providing compassionate care to those in our community who need it most. Throughout those years, we remained steadfast to the Sisters of Mercy mode of care, which is to go where healthcare is most needed. What we have learned through decades of serving Atlanta’s most vulnerable is that access to care is just the start of our client’s journey towards good health.

Compassion NOW: Join the Conspiracy!

Across Atlanta and beyond, people are suffering—Mercy Care invites you to respond with radical goodness. Mercy Care CEO Kathryn Lawler has written an Op-Ed in the Atlanta Journal Constitution about how important COMPASSION is in community and how we should expect it of our leaders and of each other, especially during these chaotic times. You can read it here.

Inspired by the Latin meaning of “conspiracy”—to breathe with—we believe we are called to draw near to those in pain, to listen deeply, and to act boldly. We can all make a difference. Compassion is not extra—it’s essential. It builds trust, heals communities, and transforms lives. Whether you’re a policymaker, healthcare leader, neighbor, or advocate, you have a role to play.
